Tent setup on a camping ground surrounded by lush woods.

You don’t have to travel far to embrace the great outdoors in Maryland. You can enjoy a tranquil natural getaway when you go camping at the Hollofield Area of Patapsco Valley State Park!

Camping

The Hollofield Area offers 73 campsites with access to picnic tables and camp fire rings. The scenic surroundings also make for a surprising escape given how close the campgrounds are to downtown Baltimore. While you’re welcome to rough it, some camp sites have electric hookups so that you can bring the comforts of home along with you.

A Breathtaking View

One of the Hollofield Area’s most prominent features is the incredible overlook with views of the Patapsco River Valley. Fall colors spread out with a vibrant mix of reds, oranges, and yellows, and catching the view at sunset promises a golden ochre hue across it all.  As the trees shed their leaves for autumn, you’ll also see gleaming hints of the river below. From this vantage point, you can also spot the historic Route 40 Bridge, part of the “Main Street of America.”

Trails and Hiking

Whether you’re just looking to stretch your legs or go on a brisk outdoor jaunt, the Hollofield Area is home to several trails with beautiful scenery everywhere you look. The Ole Ranger Trail is the only route that stretches over a mile, and it rewards explorers with a pleasant trek through natural surroundings as well as connections to the Peaceful Pond Trail. Named after the tranquil waters at its end, the Peaceful Pond Trail is the shortest hike at the Hollofield Area, covering just .1 mile. For a slightly longer excursion, consider the Union Dam Trail or the River Ridge Trail. You could even make a day of hiking and explore all the routes.

Getting There

Patapsco Valley State Park’s Hollofield Area is located at 8020 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, Maryland 21043. You can visit the Department of Natural Resources’ site for more information on reservations, park passes, and events. Keep in mind that an extensive construction project has begun nearby, and this could impact the accessibility of certain trails until its completion, which is expected to be in winter, 2021.
