There are a lot of moving parts in your vehicle, and all those vital systems must perform under pressure mile after mile. Wear and tear are bound to build up over time, so it’s important to keep up to date with all your vehicle’s basic needs. Staying on top of your essential auto maintenance can keep more serious problems from developing, so remember to check these key points across your vehicle to ensure it remains in safe, reliable condition.

Check the Engine Oil

Your car’s engine serves as its beating heart, and it needs clean oil to run smoothly. If the oil level runs low, or if the oil becomes contaminated, the engine can’t function as well as it needs to, and this can lead to performance trouble or even a complete breakdown. To check your vehicle’s oil, look under the hood and pull out the oil dipstick. Observe the color of the oil, which should be a golden hue. If its dark or muddy, or if it’s below the notch on the dipstick, then your car is due for an oil change.

Inspect the Tires, Wheels, and Brakes

Even the most durable tires still wear down over time, so take a look at your tread to see if you can still count on them for proper traction. While you’re there, look out for bulges, cracks in the rubber, or signs of dry rot. You should also keep a tire pressure gauge handy, as temperature changes and other factors can cause tires to go slack, impacting both your gas mileage and safety. Keep in mind that some issues become more obvious once you’re on the road. If you notice your vehicle seems to pull to the side as you drive, your wheel alignment might need to be adjusted. If you hear squealing as you apply the brakes, your brake system should be inspected by a professional as well.
