The holiday season has come and gone, and as you look around your community, you’ll see your neighbors taking the wreathes and garlands down from their homes. Now is the time to put those Christmas decorations away, and that includes the centerpiece, the Christmas tree. If you brought in a live tree last month, you don’t have to throw it out. There are plenty of ways to repurpose that live tree, so check out these DIY ideas!

If your tree hasn’t been treated with any chemicals, you can put it to work in the yard and garden. Mulch is great for helping your soil retain moisture, prevent weeds, and maintain a stable temperature during the cold winter months, and the Christmas tree offers prime wood for mulching. You can also keep the tree whole, prop it up with a post or fence, and load the branches with bird feeders to bring some wildlife to your green space. While pine trees aren’t ideal indoor firewood due to their creosote content, you can still use part of the old tree to start an outdoor fire pit. Snap off a few branches for quick-burning kindling in your next bonfire.

In the Home

To decorate your home with some fitting winter accents, the pine branches from your tree can be fashioned into wreathes or placed in vases around other seasonal foliage. If you really want to get crafty, you can also cut the tree into rings and make the slices into wall art, coasters, ornaments, or whatever else your imagination can come up with. Real pine trees can generate a lot of sap and offer a habitat for bugs, so you might want to heat the slices on parchment paper in the oven at 175° Fahrenheit for a couple of hours to make them easier to work with. If you have a fish tank, you can place a couple of branches on its floor to provide your aquatic friends with some natural shelter. This will simulate the debris that collects on the bottoms of the rivers and the lakes that they’re used to.
